Traveling, Writing, Learning.
I'm finally back in Toronto!
This year has been full of travels so far. It feels strange to sleep in my own bed- like I'm visiting someone I used to know, or like it's just another hotel.
But it's nice to live out of a closet instead of a suitcase, to go to my favourite coffee place, to walk and know where I'm going.
In January I drove across the country with a film crew and had all sorts of experiences; like being a teenage runaway in a feature film, seeing the Grand Canyon at sunrise, and singing to a bar full of cowboys in New Mexico.
I played a show at the Casbah last weekend- it was fun to perform where I played some of my first shows. It's good to reflect on how I've grown since then, and how my songs have developed and grown with me.
Sometimes I spend hours trying to understand synth presets or loop pedals, and it's easy to forget that I need to focus on writing great songs! And I am learning about this, more and more.
This year so far has meant lots of co-writing and collaborating. I've been diving into genres that are unfamiliar, and doing more home recording to fully understand what sort of production makes my songs wake up and come to life.
In January I received some Factor grants (my first grants ever!) and that was really affirming. I'm excited to have some funds that will allow me to make the songs in my head a reality, and to finally share them with those of you who have been so patient. Not a responsibility that I take lightly. Excited to get to work and to make something I can feel proud of.
The geniuses at Rock Paper Management are a big part of these good things that are happening. I'm happy to be on their team.
In a few weeks, I'm going to the UK until May to work on some music projects I feel really excited about. I've never been to London so I'm excited to see friends, get one step closer to my first album, and play some shows in Europe.
Thanks for your support so far this year.
We are only at the beginning of something great and new.
